MUSTAFA RAFIQ
Presented by Regina Folk Festival

Mustafa Rafiq is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amiskwaciy (Edmonton) on Treaty 6 territory. Born in 1995 to Fijian immigrants, he researches the interwoven relations between Blackness, nature, divinity, sound and time through the lens of his African and East Indian lineage both collaboratively, and solo, often under the moniker ‘Family Injera’. Rafiq’s creative practice orbits around composed experimental soundscapes involving guitar, saxophone, electronics, percussion and voice. Within his work, themes of diaspora, gender expression and de-colonizing music structures are explored sonically via Tuareg-style guitar-drone & spiritual field recordings cloaked in abrasive ambient noise.

Julia McDougall’s dream-pop project Yawn is a supercharged core of misty psychedelia and electronic haze, emerging in intricately layered pop stories of longing, nostalgia, and hope. Amongst this panorama is McDougall’s distinct voice, laid out across Yawn’s spectrum of rich buzzing melodies as the melodic heart of the project. With cues from Caroline Polachek and Electric Light Orchestra, Yawn’s strength lies in its versatility, delicate, bombastic as infectiously catchy or as richly cathartic as it’s needed.

FEVERFEW

Feverfew was birthed in 1876 when a three legged cat whispered a forbidden word into the ear of a dying elephant. At the moment of its pronouncement a star vanished and three nightmares came into being, each one more beautiful than the last.
The second nightmare lived for three days in the heart of a rose in the form of a white worm, and died when the rose was ripped open by a three year old child who crushed the worm beneath the heel of his boot. The child grew up and had a child, who had a child, and all were haunted in dreams by the trumpeting of the elephant, who wished to warn them of the corrupted star, and the danger of the word that devoured it. In 1989 the child of the child of the child of the child of the worm-killer was born, and learned the harp. She tried to sing the evil word back to sleep, but it would not obey her. Twenty years have passed since the first attempt, and she is still trying.

SUNSHOWER GUNPOWDER

Sunshower Gunpowder hails from the prairies of Treaty 6 territory and throws elements of garage rock, psychedelic, post punk, and noise into their own blender. Formed by two longtime friends in fall of 2023, the duo recorded demos in their basement and are currently in the studio working on their first official release (which will be out by the end of this year.) Still a relatively young band, their sound is still evolving - the SunGuns stay true to the bands they love like The Stooges and The Gun Club but simultaneously keep things fresh. Lyrically, their songs have multiple meanings that come from movie references, stories, as well indigenous perspectives, experiences, stereotypes, and identity.
